I had a meaningful conversation with her and then even interviewed her about life, fitness, food, and health!
I’d seen this woman at the coffee shop I regularly work from several times. I always looked at her twice, if not 10 times! I don’t think she noticed me constantly looking over my shoulder at her, as she was in deep conversation and working on her laptop with a friend.
As much as I was dying to walk over to their table to inquire about their work, I didn’t have the nerve to be rude and intrude.
A few days ago, however, I got lucky. Suddenly, there she was, sitting at the table right next to me, alone!
This time, I didn’t think twice and immediately leaned across to her and said: “Excuse me, I hope I’m not bothering you. My name is Rob. I see you here a lot working on your laptop like me, and I was wondering what you do for work.”
She was not offended by me jumping into her world and asking her what she does for work. After all, she always seemed very busy plugging away on her keyboard, like me, when I’m writing my stories.
An unexpected job and several common interests
She then told me she’s in marketing and sales. So I asked if it was all online as she’s always at the coffee shop on her computer in the afternoons at the same time as me.
She explained that she works morning in the office and then visits customers door-to-door to market and sell her employer’s products.
You will never guess what that is!
An intelligent and elegant young woman selling car batteries to car workshops, mechanics, and retail outlets, really?
My first thought was that selling car batteries was a man’s job, as mostly men are mechanics who sell and install the batteries to their customers.
But, then I gave it a few minutes thought and said to myself, how clever of her boss. Employing a sharp-looking intelligent young lady selling his batteries to a predominantly male-dominated market was pure genius.
Although her job may not sound sexy, she makes a bunch of money, as she has many customers and car batteries are in constant high demand. If a customer needs more batteries, who’s he going to call?
The polite and sharp battery marketing lady, or a grumpy old man?
The common interests
She joins me at my table, and we start chatting about our lives and interests in general.
It turned out she loves nature, and fitness training, eats a low-carb and high-protein diet, and takes good care of her health.
In addition, instead of partying with friends in the evenings, as most women here in Southeast Asia do, she takes dancing classes in various styles – Latin, Hip-Hop, and Jazz-Funk.
Then an idea popped up in my head, and I asked her to do an interview with me once I’d explained my work as a nutritionist, health coach, writer, and trainer because we had many similar interests.

Please read my related story about dating and living in Southeast Asia:
The moral of the story and lesson learned is that it is possible to meet “normal” low-key but successful independent Southeast Asian women who are not only thinking of you as their ATM and meal ticket!
I’ll keep up the positivity, and hopefully, I will soon forge a real relationship that is not based on money only!
Wish me luck.
