Setbacks can happen. It’s how you deal with these setbacks that matters.
In this blog post and my attached video, I explain why my day was rough and what I did to improve it, despite feeling tired, drained, low-energy, frustrated, and a little depressed.
Dealing with setbacks is all about awareness – acknowledging your feelings and emotions and why these setbacks happen. Once you have analyzed your situation, you can take action, change your mindset, and make a negative a positive situation.
As a result, a setback becomes an opportunity!
Dwelling on feeling down, being stressed and tired because something unexpectedly negative happened will not help you regain the power over your mind.
In my case, I had a bad night’s sleep. I couldn’t sleep at all so I felt like hell for most of the day and thought I could barely function.
My only thought was:
“How will I get through this day, sleep, and wake up to a better tomorrow?”
Then suddenly, my brain started firing me warning shots! I immediately bolted upright in my bed and reprimanded myself to stop feeling down and instead take action!
I then spoke very loudly:
“Come on Rob, you are an expert in this field, so you know better than to lie around and make yourself more miserable by doing nothing!”
Despite feeling tired and lethargic and longing only to go back to bed, I did the opposite.
Fighting Back!
I left my home around 2 pm after I had a small bite and then embarked on a 3-hour walk all over the city I am currently living in – Kampot, Cambodia, while making a mindful effort to take in everything around me, instead of thinking about my previously negative mindset.
Simply getting outside, and spending time in nature, with sun exposure quickly boosted my vitamin D levels and mood. I soon felt much better, while eliminating the setback from my mind.
During my walk, I also confronted myself about my predicament and practiced positive self-talk out loud. Talking to yourself instead of just rolling things around in your mind is far more powerful.
That’s what we call positive self-affirmation. A powerful tool if you understand and use it frequently, along with mind-calming meditation, which admittedly, I’ve lately been neglecting.

The Inspiration To Make a Positive Out of a Negative
After 1 hour I suddenly felt inspired and able to make this video and talk about my personal feelings and emotions by publishing this post and video.
Why?
Because I want to be honest and transparent with you that I also suffer setbacks, which can cause negative thinking and disappointment.
I practice and teach how to stay positive and why building a strong mindset is just as vital (if not more) than exercising and keeping your body fit. However, I also want to show you that I am also vulnerable and cannot always achieve the goals I set.
Simultaneously, I want to express by using my example that it’s ok to feel down at times.
It’s simple: Nobody is immune from setbacks. It’s just a matter of time until they happen to each one of us. Our lives are mostly not under our control. You can control what you do and your immediate space, but you can’t control what goes on around, behind, and in front of you.
Those are the facts of life and where the potholes lie that cause unexpected setbacks!
The key? How you choose to react to the situation that caused your negative mindset. Accepting that it was out of your control helps to regain perspective and a fresh start.
5 Action Steps To Counteract Setbacks:
1- Re-take control of your mind and make a reset.
2 -Take actions that lead you back to a happier place quickly.
3- Regain power over your mind rather than letting your mind control you!
4- Practice positive “self-affirmations,” out loud, in public or at home.
5- Focus on your confidence and realize this setback was a flash in the pan of life.
