While I write this story, here I am sitting at my favorite resort and garden lounge, The Keys by Tamoka, in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I couldn’t be luckier — I’m in harmony, relaxed, and perfectly balanced in body, mind, and soul.
However, if I’d remain in the same spot and not move all day, the fun of the moment would run away, and I’d get bored and uptight.
Fight or flight? By staying in your comfort zone for too long, you unknowingly release cortisol — your stress hormone — into your system.
You become bored, get ants in your pants, or start feeling a bit numb and dumb!
Stepping out of my physical comfort zone
That’s not a good place to be, and the reason why there’s something very blue right in front of me — a beautiful swimming pool where I’ll soon swim sprint, which is agonizingly tough to do!
Beyond the pool is a spacious green garden with lush trees and flowers — my next escape and “push me” plan after the swim for my handstand practice.
By exercising short but sweet — meaning hard, I’ve upped my game and healthily stressed my body for 10 minutes each time. The total workout time with the handstands, sprints, and planks was 20 minutes.
That’s a mega bang for your buck workout, with strength-skill-sprint-planks combined into that mini session. That’s what I call efficient and effective bodyweight training!
Pushing my mental state of calm into a thought-provoking yet enjoyable frenzy
You may think I’m a deep thinker who takes himself seriously. Maybe not — I’m just saying.
The truth is, I’m quite the opposite — I love to joke around and make fun throughout the whole day.
I’ll giggle when I go with my better half to buy bacon, eggs, and sausages at my local supermarket, comparing the sausages to something else.
When I cook our meals, I like to mess about and dance around with the music playing in the background.
That’s always fun and games until someone gets hurt — that’s usually me when the sizzling butter and grease jump out of the frying and burn my hand!
But that’s okay — a slight shock to the system, releasing cortisol, sending a warning shot, and you out of your comfort zone by stimulating your mind to be more aware!
Danger, you’re cooking at a high temperature with fire! Attention is required, Rob!
Then, of course, I’m writing, which is a fun-filled creative thing I love to do. Writing always makes me feel fulfilled and happy
When I finish my work, I’ll nail those swim sprints, sit back down and read a few articles by a few wonderful writers on Medium.
My favorite author is Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, who writes unique stories daily.
Once you’ve read this, I highly recommend clicking the link above and heading over to Dr. Yildiz’z page to enjoy his stimulating and informative articles.
By pushing yourself to write exciting content people actually enjoy, then reading various articles about different topics, you’re again moving out of your comfort zone while learning and expanding your horizons.
After that’s all over and done with, by all means, slip back into the space that relaxes and makes you feel secure and at ease.
Enjoy the peace and comfort surrounding you.
Final Thoughts
“The word ‘homeostasis’ originates from the Greek word meaning “staying the same” and involves the balance and consistency of certain conditions.”www.nzqa.govt.nz
Seeking and finding optimal life balance and homeostasis is advisable, however, stepping away from your comfortable sofa-zone is equally important.
Challenge your body and mind every day, even if you may initially not feel like doing so.
Once you push your limits and have completed the challenge you set out for, you’ll feel positive and exhilarated for doing so!
Please give it a go for a few days and let me know how this works for you.
