The first thing you need to realize is that sugar is really bad for you, it’s toxic and makes you fat and sick.
That may be a hard statement to swallow, but it’s the naked truth.
In my opinion, sugar should be banned. It ruins so many people’s lives, yet nobody talks about it. Sugar is tucked away in so many food items you’d never think about.
However, the most obvious sources are the biggest culprits and they are also your favorites.
How can I live without yummy, cakes, candy, cookies, maple syrup, pancakes, sodas, protein bars, yogurt, milk, and plain old sugar in my coffee?
Those are only a few samples of your daily potential sugar bombs — there are thousands more.
Let’s focus on how to unhook yourself from sugar
A reader asked me this question some days ago:
If you’re addicted to sugar, it’s an addiction and for some, like any addiction, it’s impossible to get off it.
My reply was, it’s simple: Just cut it out, lose weight, and massively improve your health, and life.
But then I thought about my statement for a moment. The reader was right.
Coming from me, who hasn’t consumed sugar in over 7 years, it seemed that simple. But, what I said was the same as telling a smoker to quit now, or a drug addict to stop immediately, and all will be fine. Of course, they mostly can’t.
Addiction doesn’t work that way — every form of addiction poses a huge challenge to stop.
Sugar is a particularly sneaky one, to the point most folks don’t think of it as an addiction.
Sugar is sugar, everyone eatss it so why shouldn’t I?
Once I understood what sugar was doing to both my body and mind, I was quick to ditch it and found it easy.
I was severely overweight, very depressed, stressed out, and unhappy. Sugar was a big contributor to my condition. I knew if I didn’t drop it, I was only going to go further south, so I put an immediate stop to it.
The sugar reduction and elimination method that could help you
Tapering is the key. If you’re addicted, eliminating sugar from one day to the next will likely freak you out, stress, and make you unhappy.
You don’t want any of those emotions in your life — life is to be enjoyed, so let’s be gentle.
Method:
Week 1
- Make note of your daily/weekly sugar consumption in your food
- Commit to cutting that by 50% in the coming week
- Make note of your daily/weekly soda and fruit juice consumption
- Drink lots and lots of water with freshly squeezed lemon, starting day 1 of your tapering
- Journal daily to track your weekly success to see if you achieved your goals
Week 2
- Cut your sugar consumption by another 50%
- Eliminate the remaining soda or fruit juices
- Journal daily to track your weekly success to see if you achieved your goals
Week 3
- Now you’re at 25% of your original sugar intake, zero fruit juices, and sodas
- Choose between removing the remaining sugar in your diet, or keeping 25%
- 25% is way better than the original 100% you were eating
- Keeping sugar in your diet does run the risk of you increasing the amounts again in the future
- Keep track of your 25% consumption by journaling
- If and when you feel ready for the jump, cut the remaining sugar and you’re free from your addiction
I’ve tried and tested this method with several of my personal coaching clients, and it works.
Going cold turkey isn’t for everyone. Now you can try this tapering method, with which you’ll succeed if you commit and are honest with yourself.
Final thought
Sugar is in almost all foods, and it’s very addictive. Once you start enjoying cakes and candies it’s almost impossible to stop and not finish them. That’s the power of sugar on your brain.
Sugar is one of the biggest culprits that causes weight gain, obesity, diabetes, clogged arteries, poor cholesterol levels, and many other ailments.
If you work on unhooking yourself from all things with sugar, you’ll lose weight, boost your energy, improve your skin, and have far less stressed and clearer mind.
